Sears water softener works by having a tank that is filled with salt, and tanks full of a special resin. The resin can remove the hardness from the water, but requires that it be regenerated by washing it with salt brine during regeneration. Water softener are either demand based (after a certain number of gallons have been processed), or time based (e.g. twice week). Regeneration happens in the early hours of the morning, depending on how you set it. It goes through several cycles, which are basically The water softener works at night while you sleep. A timer runs the system through a cycle which prepares the resin beads for another day of softening water. It automatically flushes a brine solution through the resin beads, backwashes the calcium from the system and settles the bed of beads into a compact bed so that it works efficiently the next day. Yet another is salt level that does not go down as the weeks pass. At sears get a water softener cleaner which is basically a sulphite powder that removes iron deposit and you need this cleaner once every six months. Every year or 18 months, try to remove all the salt from the tank and wash it. You can use warm water, and a wet/dry vacuum to remove it. Sears also provides online service that makes your day to day life easier. Either you can ask a sears professional to install, clean the softener for you or you can do yourself through manuals. You can buy parts and products and save some money on installation. You can't go wrong with a Sears water softener.
